ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Latter-Day Saints are acutely aware of the linking of generations, of our connection to each human as brothers and sisters, the literal children of our Heavenly Father. We come individually to mothers and fathers, learn precept upon precept, then form our own unions, bring children into the world, and generations of God’s children continue.

PROCESS

A full sized drawing of the quilt was made partly free-hand, partly with traced images projected onto the wall. Mercerized cotton print-cloth was hand painted with Procion MX dyes for the blue sky and the leaves. Commercial fabrics were used for the tree trunk. The trunk pattern was traced onto freezer paper, cut and ironed onto the fabric. Contours were then painted with setacolor fabric paints and fabric was hand appliqued to the background. Leaves were cut free-hand and hand appliqued.

Many words and scriptures from the Old Testament and the Book of Mormon concerning the linking of generations are printed on the brown border at the bottom using both photocopy transfer and laser printing. The words “The hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers” (from Malachi 4:6) were carved into white plastic erasors and stamped onto the inside border. The quilt was then machine quilted.

Photographs of the artist’s ancestors were scanned then digitally manipulated to delete backgrounds, collage, and change colors to sepia-tone. Prepared for dye (PFD) silk organza was then treated with Bubble Jet Set, dried, iron to freezer paper and cut to size then printed on an ink-jet color printer. Don’t think you need fancy equipment for this. I currently use a Lexmark Z-11 that was around $40.00 after a rebate. (Doesn’t mean I’m not wishing for a new printer!) The fabric was rinsed, dried, ironed then cut to shape and fused to the (already quilted) surface. Shades were created with tulle netting underneath the silk organza.

The Same process was used to create the family pictures in the border of the quilt.

Photos were scanned then digitally manipulated for color then printed with Bubble Jet Set treated cotton print cloth.

I discovered that Bubble Jet Set does NOT like being washed in hot water with synthrapol. Ouch. I had completed the top when an unexpected kid+dirt situation required a “remove excess dye” bath. All of the blue printed images came out rather pinkish purple. I picked out all the quilting and cut out the photos, re-printed all of the photos, and hand- appliqued them down. This time I added my first attempt at hand- quilting around the people as a machine line was too heavy. Click on the images at left to see before and after details.
