This is my first truly rebelious quilt... begun in a class with Sherry Wood. Fabrics were layered on top of a backing and batting, quilted, then sliced and zig-zagged back together. My first impulse was to write “DIE YOU QUILT POLICE!!!” but that sounded a bit too strident. Instead phrases like “swim upstream”, “Go against the flow” are hidden in the borders. Any mother of young children will recognize to verses (and is no doubt sick of hearing it a billion times a day when it is your child’s current favorite) “Stop!, said the Momma fish, or you will get lost. But the three little fishes didn’t want to be bossed.” This quilt has only hung in one exhibit. The very bottom back corner of the North Carolina State Quilt Symposium in 1998.
